Sheet 03 · Small improvements

Small improvements.

Upgrades that make a room work better, without turning into a renovation. These are the jobs you choose, rather than the ones that choose you.

01What we fit

Six upgrades worth doing properly.

For each one: what’s involved, the decisions you’ll make, and what’s worth knowing before you start. If your idea isn’t here, ask anyway.

IMP-01

Fixture & hardware refresh

New faucets, light fixtures, cabinet pulls, door handles and bathroom accessories. The fastest way to make a dated room look looked-after.

Involves
Removing the old pieces, fitting the new ones to the existing plumbing and wiring, patching and touching up the marks the old ones leave behind.
You decide
Finish (and whether it matches across the room), style, and whether you buy the fixtures or we source them.
Good to know
Buying your own is fine. Send us the product links before you order and we’ll check they’ll fit what’s there.

IMP-02

Shelving & storage

Floating shelves, closet systems, pantry shelving and garage wall storage that actually holds what you put on it.

Involves
Finding studs or solid backing, choosing the right fixings for the wall, leveling, and fitting to the room rather than to the box.
You decide
What it needs to hold (books weigh more than you think), finished heights, and materials.
Good to know
Floating shelves need solid backing. If the wall can’t take the load, we’ll suggest a bracketed option instead.

IMP-03

Backsplash & small tile

Kitchen backsplashes, laundry splashbacks and small tiled areas like entries and niches.

Involves
Prepping the wall, laying out the pattern so the cuts land where you won’t notice them, setting, grouting and sealing.
You decide
Tile size and pattern, grout color, and where the tile stops at the edges and around windows.
Good to know
We lay the pattern out dry before the first tile goes up, so you can see how it falls and change your mind before anything is stuck down.

IMP-04

Trim & finish carpentry

New baseboards, door casings, chair rail, picture rail and simple wall paneling. Small changes that make rooms look built rather than assembled.

Involves
Measuring and coping corners, fixing to studs, filling, caulking and painting so the joints disappear.
You decide
Profile (simple, classic or somewhere between), paint or stain, and how far through the house it runs.
Good to know
Matching new trim to old is possible more often than people think. Bring us a photo of what you have.

IMP-05

Safety & easier living

Grab bars, stair handrails, lever handles and brighter fixtures for people who want their home to work for them for longer.

Involves
Locating solid backing (or adding it), fitting at heights that suit the people using them, and finishing neatly.
You decide
Placement. We mark positions for you to try before we drill a single hole.
Good to know
A grab bar is only as good as what it’s fixed into. Towel bars are not grab bars, however sturdy they look.

IMP-06

Weatherproofing & comfort

Weatherstripping, door sweeps, window caulking and sealed gaps. Fewer drafts, quieter rooms, and doors that close with a satisfying click.

Involves
Finding where air gets in, removing tired seals, and replacing them with the right profile for each door and window.
You decide
Mostly nothing. Just which rooms bother you most.
Good to know
Drafts are easiest to find on a cold, windy day. If you can, book for one.

02How improvement jobs run

You pick the change. We fit it properly.

Improvements have more decisions in them than repairs, so we put the decisions first.

  1. 01

    Send the idea

Photos of the space and links to anything you’ve seen and liked. Rough is fine.

  2. 02

    We talk through options

What’s involved, what will and won’t work with the space, and the choices you’ll need to make.

  3. 03

    Materials, your way

You buy the fixtures and we fit them, or we source them for you. Either is fine; we’ll price it accordingly.

  4. 04

    Fitted, finished, shown

Installed, tidied, and a walkthrough of how anything new works.

03Where we draw the line

Small means small.

We’re the right call for upgrades that fit within a room as it is. Moving walls, plumbing or wiring is renovation work, and it needs a different kind of contractor.

  • Yes: a new faucet where the old one was
  • Yes: a light fixture swapped on existing wiring
  • Yes: shelving, trim, tile and hardware within a room
  • No: moving a sink, adding outlets or opening walls
